The Brief

My wife and I had recently moved into our house and had not been there long. A few times I had been driving out of our estate I had seen a neighbour with the most incredible vintage car which I soon recognised to be a Chevrolet Corvette. The man who owned it would only get it out on the driveway and carefully maintain it before parking it securely in its garage. I decided I would knock on and ask him if I could take a look. I was desperate for some photos to take so I could do a drawing of this car. I knocked on and introduced himself. He said “You’re that running man! That running you do with a pack is mental!” He was not wrong. At the time I was training twice a day and sometimes running with a 50lb pack on my back. This was 6 days a week with a view to getting a place on the UK international athletics team. I asked him if he would let me take a series of photos for a drawing. He kindly agreed and even fired up the engine which was a treat.

The Result

This is one of 4 drawings which are now a framed up together. I wanted to draw the car, the engine block, because it was stunning, the badges and a section of the rear of the car. I wanted to demonstrate my technical skills here to show the accuracy of the drawing, especially as regards the engine block. I think the photo, with the drawing shown inset shows you that this is totally accurate. A lot of people double take when they are told the small picture inset is my drawing. I exhibit this drawing at cars shows as an example piece. It shows something a little different that a potential client could have on their wall, People like the fact that this could be their car immortalised on the wall.
